Royal Pains, USA Network's first home-grown doctor-drama, stars Mark Feuerstein as Dr. Hank Lawson, a recently axed Manhattan medical wunderkind. The human foot is an intricate structure, derived of several different tendons, ligaments and small bones. Shin splints can be an annoying problem for the runner and non-runner alike. How do you know if you have a herniated disc?

Pain in the front of the foot, the forefoot, often occurs in the arch or ball of the foot, and injuries to the back of the foot, the hindfoot, will be found in the heel, sole or rear tendons. In the toes, pain can be caused by corns and calluses, ingrown toenails, bursitis, bunions, or hammertoes. Typically fractures occur in the sesamoid bones, the small bones of the foot or in the Ankle Pain symptoms. If you suspect that you have a stress fracture, stay off your foot so that the bone does not break.

Diabetes mellitus or simply diabetes is a combination disease in your metabolism. This refers to a condition whereby the nerve between the fourth and third toe increases in thickness and thus prevents painful symptoms. The most common signs of Morton's Neuroma are shooting pains and burning sensations between the fourth and third toes, which are usually most sever while walking or exercising. A pinched nerve is another common cause of foot pain and can present pretty much anywhere across the foot. Diabetes sufferers may also find themselves with an increased risk of foot pain due to Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, which is caused by an irregular blood sugar content.

The disease is brought about by increased stress and load in the area secondary to prolonged running and jumping activities. Edema and pain are present as the condition becomes more severe. This is the term used in sprain in the proximal phalanx of the big toe. It happens after the big toe is hyper extended which causes a tear on the supporting ligaments. Walking and running are very painful with this condition. As with the carpal tunnel in the hand, tarsal tunnel is also a condition wherein the major nerve going to the area of the foot is impinged between a bone and a tissue.

If pain occurs at the end of the day, consider adjusting to flat dress shoes for a few days per week to allow the feet some rest from tight shoes which will help feet heal in between wearing higher heels. From the narrowing of the toe box (the area surrounding the front of the foot) to the angle of incline, these shoes can do quite a bit of internal damage to feet.

It is the result of the movement of the base of the big toe away from the smaller toes. At the same time, the top of the big toe moves toward the smaller toes. This may cause the head of the metatarsal bone to stick out and rub against the side of your shoe. A stress fracture in your foot usually occurs in one of the five metatarsal bones. These fractures are caused by overuse during strenuous exercise, particularly running and other high-impact aerobic sports. When a cause cannot be determined, any pain on the ball of the foot is generally referred to as metatarsalgia It is most likely caused by poor footwear or by high-impact activities. People with a high arched foot are more likely to develop metatarsalgia. When you have too much pronation, the outside your foot turns upward. Heel pain is the most common foot problem. Plantar fasciitis occurs from small tears and inflammation in the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a ligament-like structure that stretches from the heel to the ball of your foot.

Any toe problem that causes pain or discomfort while walking should be evaluated. Treatment of hammertoe pain is directly dependent on the extent of development of the deformity and level of pain. Early recognition and modification of shoe gear can give good relief. However, if structural changes have occurred in the toe and the deformity is painful, surgical correction may be recommended to relieve pain, correct the problem and provide a stable, functional toe. The type of surgery performed will depend on a thorough evaluation of the toe, the factors causing the deformity and which treatment is likely to be the most successful. The pain can be dull or sharp, constant or intermittent.
