Inside Desiree Cousteau is a classic adult film directed by Leon Gucci, and was released in 1979.
Supposedly semi-biographical, Desiree Cousteau presents the story of how she entered the adult film industry.
The film is one of the most enduring adult films of the 1970s, and is one of the most widely-known films of it's time, featuring such stars as John Holmes, Juliet Anderson, Sharon Kane, and Susan Nero.
Plot Summary
Desiree Cousteau is shown in various domestic settings, supposedly at her home, presenting her story of how she became involved in the adult film industry. After some dialogue, the film features cutaway scenes showing various positions of employment that Desiree held, and how she often lost her job as a result of her naivity after unwitting sexual encounters with both men & women.
Eventually, she realizes that as a result of her experiences, she should become a porn actress, and is introduced to the industry, where she becomes a recognized star.
Strengths & Weaknesses
After an excellent start, with interesting & amusing, as well as hot, vignettes, with strong character performances, the story does tend to fall down in the third act. The final orgy scene, while full of action, seems to have little or no connection to the rest of the plot, and it occurs against the grain of the film.
The film as a whole trails off slowly after the first three scenes, although some praise goes a later scene, where after becoming a star, a fan of Desiree who delivers groceries to her house is star-struck. Telling her how beautiful she is, and that he's seen all her films, she offers herself to him in a hot encounter, for his loyalty to her as a fan.
Credit must go to Desiree Cousteau throughout the film, with particular reference to the first half, where her naive & somewhat ditsy persona is well portrayed. Her performance in this film, as well as character portrayals in other films (such as Hot And Saucy Pizza Girls) had a lasting effect on Desiree Cousteau's career, and she was often mistakenly seen as having these attributes outside of the film, although it is referenced in some circles she was actually quite intelligent, and it is reported that she left the industry after completing her psychology degree (although her post-porn career is somewhat of a mystery). Furthermore, Desiree was able to pull off several very convincing performances with women in the film, although she was reported to have been very uncomfortable in performing with other women.
The superstar of the era, John Holmes, has a scene on a yacht in which Desiree and Serena, having had a lesbian encounter, take turns in giving head to Holmes. Desiree soon leaves Holmes & Serena together so she can have sex with the captain of the yacht in his cabin (played by Aaron Stuart), and Serena continues to suck Holmes' huge cock until he cums on her face. It is viewed with some disappointment that the scene was limited to one-dimensional oral sex, and the absence of any penetration leaves this scene lacking, as it is interspersed with scenes of Desiree with the middle-aged captain of the yacht.

In the first sex scene of the film, Desiree takes a job as a reporter, and is sent to interview Mr Ryan, a Presidential hopeful (played by Richard Pacheco). At first dismissing her, she pleads with him for an interview, and is invited to his home, where he is in his swimming pool. She falls, or rather is pulled, into the pool by Mr Ryan, and is highly upset. The scene briefly cuts back to Desiree at home, later in the timeline, explaining that Mr Ryan behaved like a true gentleman, before cutting back to the poolside where Desiree is giving him head. Mr Ryan then fucks her in several positions, before cumming on her backside. They then continue fucking in the pool, with some unique underwater photography catching the action, before Mr Ryan pulls out of Desiree's pussy and shoots his load in the pool. The underwater photography catches the wads of cum floating down towards the lens.
After being dismissed as a reporter for writing an article on her experiences with Mr Ryan, Desiree takes a job selling perfumes door-to-door. She arrives at a house, where an unnamed woman (played by Misty Regan) is using various vibrators to masturbate, penetrating both her pussy & asshole. Desiree watches from the window, and starts to masturbate, and eventually moves in next to the bed. After Regan climaxes, she notices Desiree next to her bed, still masturbating, and Desiree stops and composes herself, saying that she is there selling perfume. After Regan's character agrees to buy everything, they have a hot lesbian encounter, and after they each climax, Regan's husband (Carl Regal - credited as Charly Rule)arrives home, after which a threesome takes place, and after taking turns at fucking her and Desiree, the husband shoots his load in their mouths.
The orgy finale doesn't seem to fit with the plotline of the film, but was a common finale to 1970s adult films. The scene itself is quite good, despite the poor editing which sees everyone clothed for a few seconds, then cuts in when the action is already under way. Although billed as an orgy, there is a degree of manogamy in the scene, rather than being an all-out gangbang. The standouts in this scene are Susan Nero (who gives an uncredited actor oral throughout the scene, while getting nailed doggy-style by another uncredited actor), and Lisa K. Loring, who starts off going down on Desiree, before being whisked away by Michael Morrison for some DP action with Mike Horner. Interestingly, Desiree has no presence in the scene after Loring departs for her DP, except as a spectator. The scene has many uncredited players, although several of the male cast are familiar faces for those who know 1970s adult film (perennial anal king Michael Morrison, a young Mike Horner, and John Seeman are amongst the notable male cast, while TJ Carson & Dorothy LeMay are amongst the female participants).
Trivia
Reviews often incorrectly claim that Susan Nero is the actress featuring in the second scene, where Desiree is selling perfumes. The actress is in fact an Australian actress, Misty Regan. Susan Nero does not appear until the orgy scene finale, and is the large-breasted actress, wearing a red & black garter. The two actresses don't actually resemble each other, but presumably, as Nero's name is prominent in the credits, reviewers mistake her as being in a scene regarded as one of the more memorable scenes in the film.
The credit roll at the end of the film is identical to another Leon Gucci film, Female Athletes, and many of the cast that are billed as appearing in Inside Desiree Cousteau didn't actually appear in the film.
The film was shot in San Francisco, with scenes shot at the Grand Hyatt & Westin St. Francis hotels, the Palace Of Fine Arts, and Union Square.
